Jana Nayagan Cast, Story, Release Date, Review & Box Office Collection 2026
Jana Nayagan is a 2026 Indian Tamil-language political action drama written and directed by H. Vinoth and produced by Venkat K. Narayana under the KVN Productions banner. It is a partial remake of the 2023 Telugu film Bhagavanth Kesari and stars Thalapathy Vijay in the lead role, alongside Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, Mamitha Baiju, Prakash Raj, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Priyamani and Narain. The music is composed by Anirudh Ravichander. The film is widely described as Vijay’s final film as an actor before his full-time move into politics, and he is now the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.
The film was originally scheduled for a Pongal release on 9 January 2026, but it was postponed after a long dispute over its censor certificate with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). It was finally cleared with an ‘A’ certificate on 9 July 2026 and released in theatres on 23 July 2026. The film opened to heavy crowds and mixed reviews, earned about ₹78 crore worldwide on its first day, and later crossed ₹320 crore worldwide. It began streaming on ZEE5 on 21 August 2026.

Plot
Jana Nayagan follows Vetri Kondan, a former police officer played by Vijay. After an incident that lands him in prison, Vetri becomes the guardian of Viji, the daughter of his late friend, and he sets out to train her to become strong and fearless, with the aim of preparing her for a life as a soldier. The film builds its emotional core on this father-daughter bond, the same relationship that anchored the original Telugu film.
Where Jana Nayagan departs from Bhagavanth Kesari is in its focus. The film adds political rivalries, terrorism and large commercial action sequences to the story, and it builds towards the question of what it means to be a leader that ordinary people can trust. Bobby Deol plays the antagonist who puts Vetri on a collision course with a powerful opponent. The film also pays tribute to Vijay’s long career, with the opening and closing credits designed as a tribute to his three decades in cinema.
Critics were divided on how well this shift worked. Some felt that the political messaging sits heavily on top of what began as a simple family story, while fans welcomed the emotional send-off and the mass moments built around Vijay.
Main Cast and Characters
Thalapathy Vijay as Vetri Kondan: Vetri is a former police officer who becomes the guardian and mentor of a young girl after his friend’s death. His strength, discipline and sense of responsibility make him a figure that people look up to, and the film gradually turns him into a leader. This is Vijay’s 69th film, and the film places his own career journey at the centre of its tribute.
Mamitha Baiju as Viji: Viji is the daughter of Vetri’s late friend and the emotional centre of the story. Vetri trains her to face fear and become strong, and their bond drives most of the film’s quieter scenes.
Bobby Deol as the antagonist: Bobby Deol plays the main villain who stands against Vetri. His character represents the power Vetri has to challenge. Some reviewers felt the role was underwritten, while others noted the face-off between the two leads as one of the film’s marketing highlights.
Pooja Hegde: Pooja Hegde appears as one of the female leads and returns to Tamil cinema in a film aimed at a very wide audience. Her role is part of the ensemble that supports Vetri’s journey.
Prakash Raj: Prakash Raj plays a pivotal supporting role. He is one of the most familiar faces in Tamil cinema and adds weight to the film’s political scenes.
Gautham Vasudev Menon: The director and actor plays an important supporting role. His presence adds to the film’s list of well-known names behind the camera and in front of it.
Priyamani, Narain, Nassar and Revathi: These actors round out the ensemble and add familiar faces across the film’s family and political strands.
Production, Creative and Technical Aspects
Development and Story
Jana Nayagan was developed as Vijay’s final film before he moved fully into politics. Director H. Vinoth, known for Theeran Adhigaaram Ondru and Nerkonda Paarvai, wrote the screenplay, working from the story of Anil Ravipudi’s Bhagavanth Kesari. The makers confirmed publicly that the film is a partial remake. Vinoth reworked the original’s focus on women’s empowerment into a larger political action story built around Vijay’s screen image.
The film was originally planned for an October 2025 release, but the date moved to January 2026 around the Pongal festival. Vijay was expected to complete shooting by May 2025, with his growing political commitments and the planning of the film’s digital release both affecting the schedule.
Casting and Characters
Vijay leads the cast as Vetri Kondan, with Mamitha Baiju as Viji and Bobby Deol as the antagonist. Pooja Hegde, Prakash Raj, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Priyamani, Narain, Nassar and Revathi complete the ensemble. The cast mixes familiar Tamil actors with performers from other industries, which fits the film’s plan to reach audiences beyond Tamil Nadu.
Production Companies
The film was produced by Venkat K. Narayana under the Bengaluru-based KVN Productions banner. KVN Productions made the announcements for the film’s delays and release plans. The Kerala distribution was handled by SSR Entertainments, and Malik Streams Corporation secured the Malaysian distribution rights.
Music and Background Score
Anirudh Ravichander composed the songs and the background score. The soundtrack was released in stages, starting with “Thalapathy Kacheri” and followed by “Oru Pere Varalaaru”, “Chella Magale” and “Raavana Mavandaa”, before the full album and the audio launch event in Malaysia. Anirudh’s score supports the film’s action scenes and the larger-than-life moments built around Vijay.
Cinematography and Editing
Sathyan Sooryan handled the cinematography, and Pradeep E. Ragav was the editor. V. Selvakumar is credited as production designer. The film’s long runtime of more than three hours was one of the most common points of criticism, with reviewers noting that the editing could have been tighter.
Music and Soundtrack Details
The soundtrack of Jana Nayagan is composed by Anirudh Ravichander and features nine tracks in the official album. The songs were released as singles over several weeks before the film’s planned January release, and the audio launch was held at Bukit Jalil National Stadium in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The table below lists the top five tracks of the album.
| No. | Track Title | Composer | Singer(s) | Lyricist |
| 1 | Thalapathy Kacheri | Anirudh Ravichander | Anirudh Ravichander, Thalapathy Vijay, Arivu | Arivu |
| 2 | Oru Pere Varalaaru | Anirudh Ravichander | Vishal Mishra, Anirudh Ravichander | Vivek |
| 3 | Chella Magale | Anirudh Ravichander | Thalapathy Vijay | Vivek |
| 4 | Raavana Mavandaa | Anirudh Ravichander | Anirudh Ravichander and chorus | Vivek |
| 5 | Adiye En Poonthene | Anirudh Ravichander | Anirudh Ravichander, Ravi G | Karthik Netha |
1. Thalapathy Kacheri
“Thalapathy Kacheri” was the first single from the film and runs for about 3 minutes and 17 seconds. It is sung by Anirudh Ravichander, Vijay and Arivu, and Arivu also wrote the lyrics. The track is a celebration number built for Vijay’s fans and became the album’s signature song.
2. Oru Pere Varalaaru
“Oru Pere Varalaaru” was the second single, and its lyric video premiered on T-Series’ YouTube channel on 18 December 2025. The title roughly means “one name is history.” It is sung by Vishal Mishra with additional vocals by Anirudh, and Vivek wrote the lyrics. The song positions Vijay as a people’s hero, and Sacnilk reported that it became the most-viewed Tamil song within its first 24 hours, with more than 26 million views.
3. Chella Magale
“Chella Magale” is a tender father-daughter song sung by Vijay himself, with lyrics by Vivek. It reflects the emotional bond between Vetri and Viji and gives the album a softer contrast to its mass numbers.
4. Raavana Mavandaa
“Raavana Mavandaa” was the fourth single, released on 2 January 2026, a day before the trailer. Anirudh sings it with chorus vocals, and Vivek wrote the lyrics. It is the album’s biggest action and elevation anthem and was designed as a theatre moment for Vijay’s fans.
5. Adiye En Poonthene
“Adiye En Poonthene” is a gentle song about a father’s love for his daughter. It is sung by Anirudh Ravichander and Ravi G, with lyrics by Karthik Netha, and it was released on 17 July 2026, a few days before the film opened in theatres.
Audio Launch
The audio launch, titled Thalapathy Thiruvizha, was held on 27 December 2025 at Bukit Jalil National Stadium in Kuala Lumpur. It was Vijay’s first audio launch outside India and the first for one of his films in about three years. Anirudh led a live orchestra, and the event featured performances from singers including Vijay Yesudas, Anuradha Sriram, Haricharan and Andrea Jeremiah, along with songs from Vijay’s earlier films. Organisers reported a crowd of more than 75,000 people, while other reports put the number above 90,000, and the event was certified by the Malaysia Book of Records. The show was telecast on Zee Tamil and streamed on ZEE5 Tamil.
Background Score
Anirudh Ravichander also composed the film’s background score. The score supports the action sequences, the political speeches and the father-daughter scenes, and it builds on the themes of the songs. Reviewers generally praised the music as one of the film’s strongest elements, even when they disagreed about the story.

Official Release Date
Jana Nayagan was released worldwide on Thursday, 23 July 2026. Industry reports before the release had pointed to 24 July, but the film opened a day earlier. It was released in theatres across Tamil Nadu, with around 3,500 shows in the state alone on the first day, and across other states and overseas markets. The first day recorded more than 13,000 shows across India.
Why the Release Date Was Postponed
The release of Jana Nayagan was postponed more than once. The table below sets out the timeline.
| Date | Event |
| October 2025 | The film was first planned for an October release, but it was moved to 2026. |
| 19 December 2025 | The film was submitted to the CBFC for certification. |
| 9 January 2026 | The planned Pongal release date. |
| 8 January 2026 | KVN Productions announced that the release was postponed due to circumstances beyond its control. |
| January 2026 | The Madras High Court’s single judge ordered the CBFC to grant a U/A certificate, but the order was challenged and the release was stayed. |
| 9 July 2026 | The CBFC cleared the film with an ‘A’ certificate after a seven-month delay. |
| 23 July 2026 | The film was released in theatres worldwide. |
During the delay, a distributor in Kerala mentioned 14 January as a possible new date, but this did not happen.
Censor Certificate
The censor certificate was the central reason for the delay. The makers said they received a communication from the board on 22 December 2025 that the film was suitable for a U/A 16+ certificate after cuts. The CBFC said its chairman had withheld the certificate because of an internal complaint, and the film was later referred to a revising committee. The makers approached the Madras High Court. A single judge ordered the board to issue a U/A certificate, but the order was challenged and stayed. The makers later withdrew the writ petition.
The film was finally cleared on 9 July 2026 with an ‘A’ certificate, and the certificate was uploaded to the CBFC website. A recertification added about 41 seconds to the runtime, which settled at about 3 hours 3 minutes and 52 seconds. Reports said the UK audience would see an uncut version with a 15+ rating. A forged certificate also circulated on social media before the actual clearance, and its creator later admitted it was fake.
The Piracy Leak
The film faced a serious piracy problem. A high-definition copy leaked online in April 2026, before the film had been certified or released. Police later told the Madras High Court that about 1.2 crore people had watched the film illegally before the CBFC clearance. Several trade analysts believe the leak, along with the long delay, reduced the film’s first-week business, especially outside Tamil Nadu.
Worldwide Theatrical Release
The film was released in Tamil, with Telugu and Hindi dubbed versions. In India, the Telugu version was called Jana Nayakudu and the Hindi version Jan Neta. Overseas, North America was among the strongest markets. Malaysia was also an important market, as the audio launch had been held in Kuala Lumpur and Malik Streams Corporation handled distribution there.
Certification and Runtime
The CBFC gave the film an ‘A’ certificate, which restricts viewing to adults. The runtime is about 183 minutes, and the opening and closing credits account for around 20 minutes of it, as they pay tribute to Vijay’s film career. The long runtime was one of the most discussed points in reviews.
Trailer Release
The official trailer was released on 3 January 2026, a day after the fourth single, “Raavana Mavandaa.” It shows Vijay as a fearless police officer taking on criminals and was widely shared by fans.
Significance of the Release
The film carried weight beyond a normal release because it is Vijay’s final film as an actor before he moved into politics. It opened about two and a half months after he took office as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. Fans celebrated with special shows, and TVK supporters welcomed the film in cinemas across the state.
OTT Release and Streaming Availability
Jana Nayagan began streaming on ZEE5 on 21 August 2026, about a month after its theatrical release. ZEE5 Tamil announced the date on its official social media. The film is available in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada, with a Hindi dubbed version expected to follow. Earlier reports had named Netflix and Amazon Prime Video as possible partners, but those talks reportedly did not go ahead after the delays and the leak.

Production Budget
The makers have not officially disclosed the budget of Jana Nayagan. Industry estimates range from ₹300 crore to ₹500 crore, with some reports giving a narrower figure of ₹300–350 crore. These are estimates rather than audited figures, and the film’s recovery depends on theatrical, digital, satellite and music rights together.
Opening Day Box Office Collection
Jana Nayagan opened with about ₹41 crore net in India on its first day, according to early Sacnilk figures, which a later report revised to ₹42.70 crore. The India gross was ₹48.27 crore and the overseas gross was ₹30 crore, bringing the worldwide gross to ₹78.27 crore. The Tamil version contributed ₹36.50 crore, while the Telugu and Hindi versions added ₹2.75 crore and ₹1.75 crore. Tamil Nadu led the states with about ₹24 crore gross, followed by Karnataka with ₹11.25 crore and Kerala with ₹5.52 crore. The Tamil version recorded an occupancy of about 68%.
The opening was strong, but it fell short of some of Vijay’s earlier records. It did not enter the ₹100 crore worldwide club on day 1 and stayed below the openings of Leo and The GOAT. It also missed the ₹50 crore India opening club for Tamil films.
First Week Box Office Collection
The film dropped about 50% on its second day, earning ₹21.15 crore net, and then recovered on the weekend. The India net collections were ₹28.50 crore on day 3 and about ₹32 crore on day 4, the film’s highest single day after the opening. After four days, the worldwide gross was about ₹217 crore. On the first Monday, the collection fell sharply by about 68% to ₹10.15 crore net, and the worldwide gross reached ₹233.24 crore after five days. The India net after five days was ₹134.90 crore.
Compared with Vijay’s earlier films, the first-week run was lower than Leo, which crossed about ₹400 crore in five days, and The GOAT, which crossed about ₹280 crore in the same period. It did, however, beat the lifetime gross of Beast within five days and passed the first-week figure of Varisu.
India Net and Gross Collection
The film crossed ₹300 crore worldwide in 12 days. The latest reported India gross is about ₹227.14 crore. India net refers to ticket revenue after entertainment tax deductions, while India gross refers to revenue before those deductions, so the two figures should not be treated as interchangeable. In Kerala, the film had a weak start compared with Leo, but it later became the top Kerala grosser of 2026. On BookMyShow, ticket sales passed 4.14 million within the first two weeks.
Overseas and Worldwide Collection
The overseas gross reached about ₹63.50 crore after three days and ₹71.50 crore after four days, with North America among the strongest markets. The latest reports put the worldwide gross at ₹320.34 crore on Sacnilk’s tally and ₹321.75 crore in another report, with Wikipedia giving an estimate of ₹320–325 crore. The film overtook the lifetime worldwide collection of Suriya’s Karuppu to become the biggest Tamil release in recent times, and it is H. Vinoth’s highest-grossing film, ahead of Thunivu and Valimai. Different publications report slightly different totals because of variations in reporting dates and estimates, and the gross figure should not be confused with the amount ultimately received by the producers and distributors.
Jana Nayagan Hit or Flop
Whether Jana Nayagan is a hit or a flop depends on which measure is used. Some outlets called it a box office success because it crossed ₹320 crore worldwide, beat Vijay’s Beast and Varisu, and recovered after a weak Monday. Other analysts, including Sacnilk, said it would still finish as a flop in terms of recovery because of its very high production cost and the effect of the leak and delays. With the budget not officially disclosed, the most accurate description is a high-grossing film that fell short of the expectations set by Leo and The GOAT, and whose final verdict depends on the true cost and the digital deal.

Critics Reviews and Overall Reception
Critics were largely negative, although most praised Vijay himself. Several reviewers described the film as a vehicle for Vijay that works better as a farewell and a political statement than as a story. The Indian Express criticised the film for putting everything around one person, and Koimoi compared it to a very long election speech. RogerEbert.com gave it a zero-star review. Reviewers also felt that Bobby Deol’s character was underused and that the film loses the emotional simplicity of Bhagavanth Kesari.
Some outlets were kinder. The Free Press Journal gave it three stars for its engaging moments, and fan-oriented reviews called it an emotional send-off, with many viewers sharing videos of fans crying in theatres.
Audience Response
Fans celebrated the film as Vijay’s final appearance on screen, and the opening day saw packed theatres in Tamil Nadu, Chennai and Coimbatore. The audience score on Rotten Tomatoes is 65%, which is much higher than the critics’ score. Viewers praised Vijay’s screen presence, the songs and the father-daughter scenes, while criticism focused on the runtime, the screenplay and the political messaging.
Where to Watch Jana Nayagan
Jana Nayagan was released in theatres on 23 July 2026 and has been streaming on ZEE5 since 21 August 2026. Its current availability in theatres may vary by city and cinema, so viewers should check local listings for showtimes and ticket booking. The film is available on OTT in four languages.
ZEE5: Stream the film in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada, with a Hindi version expected to follow. A ZEE5 subscription is required, and the sports add-on is not needed to watch the film.
BookMyShow: Search for the film to check nearby cinemas, showtimes and ticket booking in cities where it is still running.
District: Browse local cinema listings and book available tickets.
PVR INOX: Search for screenings at participating PVR and INOX cinemas.
Official audio platforms: Listen to the film’s songs on the official music services and the T-Series YouTube channel.
Searches for “Jana Nayagan movie download,” “full movie download” or “movie link” lead to pirated copies of the film. Downloading or streaming these copies is illegal, and the film’s leak in April 2026 was a major issue for the makers. The safest and legal way to watch the film is through ZEE5 or in cinemas.
Is Jana Nayagan Worth Watching?
Jana Nayagan is worth watching for Thalapathy Vijay’s fans and for viewers who enjoy loud, emotional mass entertainers with a political edge. Vijay leads with the screen presence that has made him one of Tamil cinema’s biggest stars, and Anirudh Ravichander’s songs and score give the film a strong musical identity. The father-daughter scenes between Vetri and Viji remain its most moving part.
However, viewers who are not Vijay fans may find the film too long and too focused on its political messaging. Critics have pointed out that the story loses some of the simplicity of Bhagavanth Kesari, and the long runtime tests patience. Viewers who know the Telugu original may find it useful to compare the two. Overall, it is best seen as a farewell to Vijay’s film career rather than as a tightly made thriller, and with the film now on ZEE5, it is easy to watch at home.
