From Child Artist to Chief Minister: The Story Behind Vijay’s Filmography

The Vijay filmography is the story of a star who grew with his audience. He started with family romances in the 1990s, then moved to action with Ghilli (2004), which became the first Tamil film to cross ₹50 Cr at the box office. Thirupaachi, Sivakasi and Pokkiri kept the mass hero image alive, while Sura (2010) was a rare failure. The second phase began with Kaavalan, Velayudham, Nanban and Thuppakki, which crossed ₹100 Cr worldwide.

From Mersal (2017) onward, every Vijay release crossed the ₹200 Cr mark: Mersal, Sarkar, Bigil, Master, Beast, Varisu, Leo and GOAT. Leo (2023) with Lokesh Kanagaraj remains his biggest film at about ₹606 Cr, and GOAT (2024) added around ₹455 Cr. Jana Nayagan (2026), a political action drama, closed his career with about ₹326.5 Cr worldwide. Having founded Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam in 2024, Vijay took oath as Tamil Nadu’s Chief Minister on 10 May 2026.
